ABOUT MISCANTHUS
This is also called Elephant Grass and is now a viable, low cost
fuel for UK biomass heating projects.
The fuel is more commonly known for growing on the banks of the
River Nile where it is used as cooking fuel by the local
population, but UK farmers have started to grow the 'energy crop'
on low grade land.
To successfully use miscanthus you need a boiler specially
designed and capable of handling its special characteristics.
Micanthus has a low calorific value in comparison to most fuels, a
low ash melting point (approximately 1,220°C compared to wood chip
at >1,400°C) and a tendency to cause
clinkering in the hearth.
There are very few boilers capable of burning this type of fuel,
but Wood Energy has some suitable, tried and tested, boilers in the
Hargassner
range that can burn miscanthus.
Hargassner has been at the forefront of development of miscanthus
combustion systems. Click
