SMOKE CONTROL AREAS
The UK has one of the most stringent pieces of legislation controlling boiler emissions in Europe. Ireland (RoI) does not have smoke control areas or generic legislation for same. Any large project would get an individual allowance in terms of emissions from the Environmental Protection Agency Ireland (EPA).
The HM Government Clean Air Act 1993 provides that no heating appliance, regardless of fuel, may emit smoke in areas designated as Smoke Control Areaswithout undergoing strict testing and certification to a British Standard protocol. Installing a biomass boiler in a smoke control area without the relevant testing having been undertaken and the necessary exemptions having been granted means the operator runs the risk of prosecution under the Act. Today, with pollution being a very visible and important part of our environmental concerns no individual or organisation can justify installing untested and unapproved heating appliances in these areas, either morally or commercially.
All Wood Energy boilers from 25kW to 3000kW have been tested to the required Standard for certification. All have been (or are soon to be) issued with the necessary Statutory Instrument (SI) allowing them to be installed and operated within the smoke control areas of each devolved Government (England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland). For the most up-to-date SI for your area please follow this link www.opsi.gov.uk
The reason why Wood Energy boilers can achieve this level of
certification? Because Wood Energy's boilers have been developed
over many years to achieve outstanding performance in terms of
efficiencies and emissions. These two factors provide a machine
that can be installed in any part of Europe and meet the very
demanding emission requirements of Europes most exacting
marketplace, the UK.
Please see the table below for the latest certification status for
